Latest iMac Looks Great, Runs Faster

Computerworld reviewer Michael deAgonia calls the new 27-inch
iMac ?a thoroughly modern all-in-one computer, with a sharp, bright screen that?s perfect for editing movies, organizing/editing photos, watching streaming video or making your own presentations.? Citing its minimalist design, enhanced performance from Sandy Bridge processors and AMD graphics chips, and the ?very important addition? of Thunderbolt data transfer capabilities, deAgonia concludes: ?Apple has delivered a solid update to what was already a popular and successful line.?

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 Review

Gigabyte has released their Z68 lineup, and I am going to look at the UD3H - a $170 Z68 board aimed at the mainstream consumer market. The Z68 based motherboards are very similar to the P67 equivalent but they have had a few extra features added. They include Virtu and SSD caching as well as allowing you to take advantage of the GPU built into your Sandy Bridge processor. Is it worth switching from P67 to Z68 for a few extra features?

Waiting for Lion: On your mark, get set, geek out

Waiting for Lion to show up in App Store? We are too. Here's how we are checking.

When you want to pull a URL from Mac App Store, you need to emulate its user agent. curl -silent -A "iMacAppStore/1.0.1 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6.7; en) AppleWebKit/533.20.25" will do that for you.

Want to search the store? Same idea, but give it a query like this: curl -A "iMacAppStore/1.0.1 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6.7; en) AppleWebKit/533.20.25" -H "X-Apple-Store-Front: 143441-1,13" 'http://ax.search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/search?q=SEARCH_PHRASE_HERE'

The search phrase must be URL-escaped, e.g. "OS X Lion" is "OS%20X%20Lion".

Then do a little grep-fu, namely grep -iv 'killer' | grep 'mt=12' | grep 'class=.name' These steps search for app listings only whose name does not include "killer", as in "Killer Guide for OS X Lion". Who knew?

I threw together a few utilities to help with this. Lionscanner is a command line app that performs this search (or, if you give it an argument searches for that instead of "OS X Lion") and then processes the results to kill everything but in-line text, i.e. no XML tags, following the greps I mentioned above.

If you run it without arguments it hunts for "OS X Lion". If it finds nothing, there's no "OS X Lion" product in App Store. Presumably. That's why I've also included the basic how-to. So you can create your own tools that are a little more flexible in case Apple doesn't name it quite "OS X Lion".

Second, I have my handy-dandy-age-of-the-dinosaurs-csh-script as always, the one you readers always mock me for. Still works, still csh, you still need to run it with something like repeat 5000 ./doLionCheck:

#! /bin/csh
./lionscanner | grep -i "lion" > /dev/null
if ($? == 0) then
echo "Available"
say "LION MAY BE AVAILABLE"
else
echo "Nada"
endif
sleep 600

Okay, that's everything you need. Don't forget to make stuff executable (chmod 755). Now go forth and build some better tools for us.

Motorola Xoom Gets Honeycomb 3.2 And Hints Of LTE

Two bits of news broke today regarding Honeycomb's first flagship device, the Motorola Xoom. The FCC has gotten their hands on the LTE module bound for Verizon customers' Xooms. With the FCC's seal of approval out of the way it should be no time before customers are alerted of the opportunity to send their Xooms in for the update. WiFi Xoom owners also have something to look forward to as updates are going out to small batches of devices with the latest release from the Android labs.

It was just 3 weeks ago that we first caught wind of a new point advance of Google's tablet operating system, Honeycomb. At the time the news was packed into a press release by Huawei announcing their 7-inch MediaPad, and espousing the device's status as the first 7-inch Android 3.2 tablet. Huawei's representatives at the time said that this latest iteration was simply optimized for the 7-inch form factor, though it has to include one other major update to Honeycomb: a new platform.

All of the Honeycomb tablets we've seen so far have been, for better or worse, Tegra 2 powered. The MediaPad, however, is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC and this would suggest that 3.2 will finally bring Honeycomb to that platform, which should make our tablet performance charts more interesting. Reports suggested that other bug fixes and some performance improvements would be coming with the release; expect to see a few 3.1 vs 3.2 comparisons sooner rather than later. And though it seems to be targeted at 7-inch devices the release was said to be hitting Motorola's Xoom in short order.

Yesterday, on the Android Developer Blog we were introduced to another feature that we would be seeing in 3.2; Screen Compatibility Mode. Despite Google's best efforts to educate their developers, at events like I/O, many applications with layouts optimized for small screens have trouble scaling their UI elements when used on tablets. Google is offering an alternative that should be familiar to early users of the iPad. When using an app that is neither optimized for Honeycomb nor extra large screens, a softbutton will be available in the status bar that provides two options. In 'Stretch' mode the app would be displayed at the devices native pixel density; this is the current implementation and can lead to undersized buttons and UI elements. In 'Zoom' mode the app is rendered at approximately 320 x 480 and then scaled to fit the larger screen. The trade-off for properly sized UI elements is a more pixelated experience, and while the iPad's implementation suffers no performance deficit from the scaling it's unclear yet whether Honeycomb devices will pay a performance penalty.

All questions will be answered soon though, as Xoom owners are seeing the 3.2 update pushed to their devices. We don't know yet what, if any, performance improvements have made it to the release, but owners will be pleased to discover that their long dormant SD card is now fully functional. Updates seem to be going out in small batches, mirroring the 3.1 release just a few months ago, so if you're reading this on your Xoom, give us a shout when you get it in. Meanwhile, the rest of us will wait with bated breath for the coming wave of 7" Honeycomb tablets, and for updates to be pushed to the rest of the flock of Android slates.

LinkedIn app for Android now available

LinkedIn for Android
LinkedIn, the 'professional' social network, has finally launched an Android app. The app has previously been available in beta for a while. The final version includes support for messages, as well as a new Reconnect button, which suggests people you may know based on your profile and current connections. LinkedIn for Android obviously has all the features you'd expect, making it easy to connect with fellow LinkedIn users from your smartphone.

The app lets you post status updates, view updates from your contacts, view your contacts' profiles, add new contacts, search for LinkedIn users (this can be either limited to your contacts, or it can go through the entire user base), and respond to invitations.

LinkedIn expects to improve its Android app in future versions by adding some features that "have been heavily requested during the public Beta".

HP Touchpad 4G Coming to AT&T

It's with some surprise that we were introduced today to the new HP TouchPad. No, not the one we're currently reviewing. HP is adding another SKU to its roster of WebOS slates, currently numbering one; and their bringing more than just HSPA+ with the HP TouchPad 4G. Clockspeed has been bumped from 1.2 Ghz to 1.5 Ghz on the updated slate, which could help with the sluggishness some early adopters may have noted. Speed is the only change though, the device still sports 32 GB of storage and a 1024x768 9.7" screen. Weight is up a few grams and battery life is down a bit; no surprises given the new radio and 25% clock increase.

The device will be available through AT&T Business Services and major retailers, pricing and release date remain a mystery, however. Why HP would push a spec update to its brand new tablet is also a bit of a mystery? The note about the device being sold through AT&T's enterprise sales division is a big clue, though. It's likely this is part of HP's efforts to push the TouchPad as an enterprise tablet, much like RIM's efforts with the PlayBook. Execs are far more likely to pay a premium for a more refined experience and expanded featureset than your average consumer. Either way, we'll update as we know more, and keep your eyes peeled for our TouchPad review soon.

New Facebook Widget For iOS 5 Notification Center

WeeFacebook is a new Facebook widget that has been designed for the iOS 5 notification centre. This is a brand new jailbreak tweak and it has been developed by the same guys that bought you WeeTwitter.

This widget works along the same lines as the WeeTwitter widget but this time using Facebook. This new widget s available for download for free right now and if you would like to see your Facebook updates in your iOS 5 notification center and you have a jailbroken iPhone then this is for you.

This new WeeFacebook widget is the latest in a line of widgets that are being put together by developers to take advantage of the new notification centre that comes with iOS 5. Apple have yet to confirm that widgets will be available in the App store but we are sure they are aware of the possibilities and we sure to jump on the bandwagon.

If the WeeFacebook widget sounds good to you then you will need to have a jailbroken version of Apple?s iOS 5 beta in order to take advantage of it. These widgets are not available through Cydia so you will have to manually install them.

Below you will find details on how to self install these widgets.

The first thing you need to do is install MobileTerminal which you will find in Cydia and then set up iPhone Explorer on your pc. Once done, plug your device into your computer.

Next from your pc download the file from https://github.com/mgebele/WeeFacebookDeb and then run iPhone Explorer and copy and paste the file you have downloaded.

Next launch MobileTerminal and switch to administrator mode by typing login and then root. Next you have to enter your password which should be alpine unless you have changed it. Next enter the text below.

# /usr/bin/dpkg -i /var/mobile/com.manuelgebele.weefacebook_1.0.1-1_iphoneos-arm.deb

Once you restart your iPhone it will be complete. Remember if you want to use this widget you need to be running iOS 5 and a jailbreak.

AnandTech Mobile Graphics Guide, Summer 2011

If desktop graphics hardware can be more than a little confusing, deciphering performance of mobile graphics parts can be (and has historically been) an absolute nightmare. Way back in the day it was at least fairly easy to figure out which desktop chip was hiding in which mobile kit, but both AMD and NVIDIA largely severed ties between mobile and desktop branding. They may not want to readily admit that, and in the case of certain models they still pretty heavily rely on the cachet associated with their desktop hardware, but it's by and large true. So to help you make sense of mobile graphics, we present to you the first in what will hopefully be a regular series of guides.

OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS & Patriot Wildfire SSDs Reviewed

Not wanting to be completely married to Intel NAND production, OCZ wanted to introduce a version of the Vertex 3 that used 32nm Toshiba Toggle NAND - similar to what was used in the beta Vertex 3 Pro we previewed a few months ago. Rather than call the new drive a Vertex 3 with a slightly different model number, OCZ opted for a more pronounced suffix: MAX IOPS. By using 32nm NAND OCZ gets more die per channel and thus can get better performance through interleaving.

Not wanting to be outdone, Patriot's first SF-2281 SSD uses the same 32nm Toshiba NAND as the Vertex 3 MAX IOPS. These two drives are the new face for high performance SandForce SSDs. Read on for our full review!

Jeff Saut: 15 Fears For The Global Portfolio Manager

jeff saut

Jeff Saut of Raymond James recently visited with portfolio managers in Europe to discuss their global outlook.  During the discussions he noted a particular gloom.  He asked 15 various managers what they see as their largest fear in the markets:

“The responses went like this: 1) fund managers that only use mutual funds and exchange trade funds (ETFs); 2) investing is practiced in a too complicated a fashion when it should be easy; 3) a military coup in Greece; 4) inflation goes down instead of up; 5) China sells half of its Treasury Bonds; 6) Europe and the U.K. don’t tackle their pension problems; 7) there is blood in the street, but the markets trade higher; 8) most of the unemployed are un-hirable; 9) the EU doesn’t stay together; 10) water; 11) I used to worry about Ireland, but I don’t anymore (now that’s funny); 12) over regulation; 13) if the EU breaks up, what happens to the boom in German exports; 14) the fact that only 11 residents in Greece declared annual incomes of one million Euros or more; and the best – everyone is so negative that when the blue skies arrive they will be ignored.”

It always good to note those loose stones that could cause us to lose our way on the trek to the top of the investment mountain.  Even if they aren’t really that loose (e.g. – “China sells half of its Treasury Bonds”).

Great Greek Resources in Community Pricing

More and more Logos users are discovering the astronomical savings that can be found in the Community Pricing program. Speed Up YouTube Streaming Thanks To TCP Optimizer

If you are frustrated by the speed of streaming YouTube videos then I have great news for you today. Now you can speed up YouTube streaming on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch thanks to TCP Optimizer which is a new Cydia tweak.

TCP Optimizer is available free of charge but you do have to have a jailbroken iDevice to be able to use it as it is a Cydia Tweak. Once you download TCP Optimizer from Cydia and refreshing your sources you should see it on the packages listings. This new tweak should take effect straight away without having to restart your device and you should be able to watch YouTube videos at decent speeds.

The TCP optimizer modifies a few settings inside the iOS and it allows a maximum of 16 un-ACK?d packets instead of 8 and it also sets the default package size to 1460 instead of 512. Not only will these changes speed up YouTube videos, they will also improve the overall internet performances of your iDevice.

TCP Optimizer will work with any iPhone or iPad that is running iOS 3.1.2 or above. If you have any issues the app can also be uninstalled without leaving any traces behind. Remember you do need to have a jailbroken iDevice to use this app.
