In yet another signal that the iPhone has become one of the go-to platforms for high-quality Japanese role-playing games, Square Enix announced today that they have released an enhanced version of one of their classic games to the App Store. It's already passed Apple inspection and is available now. Square has positioned itself as essentially the only major player in the genre on iOS and is even more fully dominating with the release of Final Fantasy III under their belt.
For those who are still unaware (the story has been retold countless times during the lead up to this game's release) Final Fantasy III is not the FFIII you may remember if you owned a Super Nintendo in the USA. Square Enix had declined to release the official FF 3, 4, and 5 in the US originally. So rather than deal with a bunch of confused consumers asking "wait...why does the series go from FF2 to FF6," they opted instead to just call FF6, FF3 in the USA. Got it? So that means that this FF game is the true FF3 that was never released in the USA until the 2006 remake on the Nintendo DS (the version on which this game is based.)
Fortunately, today we're getting the optimized version with full 3D graphics, retouched gameplay, and all-new cutscenes among other goodies. We're also hearing that the controls are even specially made for iOS. Which alleviates concerns that this would be a tired port from 2006. It's still a port, but it sounds like a very good port.
And it had better be a good port for the premium price they're asking. Right now, FF3 is going for $15.99 [iTunes Link]. Now before you go storming off keep in mind that this is a game that released at $40 on the NDS. And also that Square has provided some of the highest quality experiences on the platform. If they're charging $15.99 then it may just be worth it.
